Management - Planning, design, & development (Facilities, signage, & visitor information)

Meyer, K. G. (2002). Proposed best management practices for OHV/ATV trail management in Alaska (Draft). Anchorage, AK: National Park Service RTCA program.

Abstract

A proposal for applying BMP's to OHV trails. Suggests a matrix for establishing the condition and socio-environmental concerns for each trail in a system and provides narrative definitions for the terms in the matrix. Based on the completed matrix, it then provides an evaluation criteria for management decisions about the routes. The suggested corrective actions range from rehabilitation of the site, to various traffic limitations. Briefly describes GPS inventory methods, then hits basic maintenance standards to ensure conformance with BMP standards. Includes a bibliography.
