Human dimensions - Recreation OHV Users

Lafond, D. (1984). The young child and the motorized all terrain vehicle. Maryland state department of education, Baltimore, Maryland: 1-40.

Abstract

Examines the development of a child's motor skills to ascertain the optimum age at which the child is ready to operate an ATV. Describes the normal development patterns of human growth such as visual perception, motor coordination, perceptual motor development, ability to recognize spatial relations, cognitive processes, etc. Concludes that children 8 years and older are generally capable, and that chronological age plays a much smaller role in accidents than does poor training, parental attitude, and parental misjudgment of the child's actual physical development (more or less rapid than normal). Includes an extensive bibliography covering general child development and education, children's perception of spatial relations and speed, children in accidents, children's visual development, and children and traffic safety.
