Environmental Impact - Wildlife/Vegetation Effects Burger, J. (1981). The effect of human
activity on birds at a coastal bay. Conservation, 21,
231-241. Examines effects of joggers, birdwatchers, lawnmowers and worm-diggers
on various species of gull, cormorant, heron, duck, egret, dowitchers,
dunlin, plover, widgeon, geese, tern, brant. Does not include any controlled
transects, it is simply a systematic observation of bird vs. human activity.
When people were absent, the birds were present 72% of the time; when
people were present, birds were present 42% of the time. Species such
as heron, egret and shorebirds were less tolerant of humans than ducks
and gulls. The study site was adjacent to Kennedy International Airport;
aircraft noise effects (and the absence of) were recorded. Includes a
bibliography. |
