Environmental Impact - Wildlife/Vegetation Effects

Burger, J. (1981). The effect of human activity on birds at a coastal bay. Conservation, 21, 231-241.

Abstract

Examines effects of joggers, birdwatchers, lawnmowers and worm-diggers on various species of gull, cormorant, heron, duck, egret, dowitchers, dunlin, plover, widgeon, geese, tern, brant. Does not include any controlled transects, it is simply a systematic observation of bird vs. human activity. When people were absent, the birds were present 72% of the time; when people were present, birds were present 42% of the time. Species such as heron, egret and shorebirds were less tolerant of humans than ducks and gulls. The study site was adjacent to Kennedy International Airport; aircraft noise effects (and the absence of) were recorded. Includes a bibliography.
