Environmental Impact - Sound

Harrison, R. T., Makel, W.J., & Lamoure, B. B. (1993). Sound levels of five motorcycles traveling over forest trails: Rock Creek ORV Area. USDA Forest Service Technology and Development Program.

Abstract

Discusses the hypothetical effects and the known effects of vehicle noise. Set up a series of control sites to measure the sound levels of five test motorcycles passing on the trail. Concludes that normal trail machines do not impact the hearing mechanisms of humans or animals; at 400 feet or greater 5 motorcycles do not increase the measured ambient noise levels (noting the phenomenon that motorcycle noise is clearly distinct even when background noise is higher); and motorcycles were occasionally audible at distances of 1100 feet but never audible at 1900 feet, in a forest environment.
