Harrison, R. T. (1974). Off-road vehicle noise: Effects on operators and bystanders. Warrendale, PA: Society of Automotive Engineers. Abstract Presents various aspects of OHV noise in forest environment. In the era when it was believed OHV noise could be fatal to wildlife (1976), it presents evidence that this was not likely, however, operators and close bystanders were at risk for hearing loss. Outlines early professional definitions of the “detection” phenomenon, that is, the problem of a listener’s negative associations with a sound as the source of annoyance, rather than the actual measured sound levels. Includes bibliography, test methods, and results of individual tests.
