Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Bratton, S.P., Hickler, M. G. & Graves, J. H.(1979). Trail erosion patters in great Smokey mountains national park. Environmental Management 3(5): 431-445.

Abstract

Examines the condition of trails used by hikers and horseback riders in the Park. Although not OHV-specific, the findings are consistent with erosion patterns on OHV trails: the rate of soil loss is dependent upon the amount and the type of traffic, slope, grade, soil type, aspect, weather, and surrounding vegetation types. Includes a discussion of management options for reducing the soil loss from trails. Includes bibliography.
