Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Tuttle, M. & Griggs, G. (1987). Soil erosion and management recommendations at three state vehicular recreation areas, California.

Abstract

Examination of soil erosion rates at three State Vehicular Recreation Areas, giving close attention to hillclimbs. Concludes that slope gradient, length of climb, soil type, and weather are key factors in rates of erosion. Based on monitoring and on catchment basin yield, erosion in open areas dedicated to ORV use was 10-to 25 times greater than in undisturbed areas. The report appears to assume that the reader understands what is meant by "high" traffic levels, as no vehicle counts for the studied areas are provided. Provides management recommendations for extending the life-span of hillclimbs and other dedicated-use areas. Includes bibliography.
