Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Dotzenko, A.D., Papamichos, N. T., & Romine, D. S. (1967). Effect of recreational use on soil and moisture conditions in rocky mountain national park. Journal of Soil and Water Conservation: 196-197.

Abstract

Summary of the results of a 39-site survey, mostly in campgrounds. Soil compaction, loss of organic matter in the soil, poor infiltration, loss of surface vegetation and increased runoff were the observed effects of intensive recreational use. The magnitude of these effects varied according to levels of use, soil type, slope, and surrounding vegetation. Not OHV-specific. Includes a brief bibliography.
