Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Slaughter, C.W., Racine, C.H.,Walker, D.A., Johnson, L.A., & Abele, G. (1990). Use of off-road vehicles and mitigation of effects in Alaska permafrost environments. Areview Environmental management 14(1): 63-72

Abstract

An attempt to develop a rating system for the soil impacts of lighter-weight ORV's. This work includes no original research, rather, the writer extrapolates from existing literature. Places ATV's of less than 500 kg in the same discussion as all other vehicles used off-road, including tractors, resource extraction equipment and construction vehicles. Distinctions between heavy equipment and ATV's occur mainly in discussions of "native subsistence and transportation uses" and in a list of recommendations to regulate recreational ORV's. Gives a table showing the ground pressure per square centimeter of various ORV's by weight class. Includes bibliography.
