Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Meyer, K. G. (2001). An introduction to the management of degraded ATV trails on wet, unstable & permafrost environments in Southcentral & interior Alaska. National Park Service Alaska Support Office, Rivers, Trails and Conservative Assistance Program: 1-49.

Abstract

Presents some of the fundamental concepts of permafrost soil characteristics, the mechanics of trail degradation in the permafrost environment, and methods to inventory and classify conditions. Details a variety of management options to resolve the impacts, such as surface hardening or "capping" unstable soils, rerouting, seasonal restrictions on use, and closure. Lists nine specific surface treatments, discusses their installation, and catalogues the author's observations of their effectiveness in the permafrost environment. Includes bibliography.
