Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Wiedmer, M. (2002). Lower Kenai peninsula summer off-road vehicle trail stream crossings. Anchorage, Alaska, Alaska Department of Fish and Game: 1-23.

Abstract

A synoptic survey to assess the distribution and character of the ORV stream crossings in a 270,000 acre land base. This was done by helicopter, photographing each observed crossing site. The total number of crossings was then calculated to produce a "stream crossing density ratio" for each watershed area. The impacts of the crossings were extrapolated from a devised formula which classified the impacts observed from the air, then multiplied them by the number of crossings in each given watershed area. ORV traffic levels were determined by vehicle counts at three trailheads during summer of 2001. Includes bibliography.
