Environmental Impact - Soil/water effects

Eckert, R.E. Jr., Wood, M.K., Blackburn, W.H. & Peterson, E.F. (1979). Impacts of off-road vehicles on the infiltration and sediment production of two desert soils. Journal of Range Management 32(5): 394-397.

Abstract

This project staged a series of controlled motorcycle and 4 wheel drive vehicle passes over two study plots, followed by simulated rainfall. Two sites were chosen for two different soil types. One type of soil disturbed by the vehicle tracks generally had poorer infiltration and saturation, and higher soil runoff, while the alternate site of a different soil type resisted soil runoff even after its infiltration ability was compromised by the vehicle traffic.
