Environmental Impact - Environmental assessments (EIS etc.) Noss, R. (1996). The ecological effects
of roads. Road-Rippers Handbook: 2-12. Ecological impacts of roads on wildlife are reviewed. There are both
direct and indirect effects of roads. Direct effects include: road kills,
road aversion and other behavioral modifications, the fragmentation and
isolation of populations increased pollution, impacts in terrestrial habitats
(habitat loss, spread of exotics, edge effects), and impacts on hydrology
and aquatic habitats (increased erosion and sediment loads). Indirect
effects include increased access by humans which often leads to the over
collecting of rare plants or wood for fires, an increase in wild fire,
and development.
