Environmental Impact - Air quality

(1979). Fugitive dust impacts during off-road vehicle (ORV) events in the California desert. Tustin, California, Westec Services, Inc: 1-40.

Abstract

Results and analysis of dust monitoring for five desert races. Researchers could not develop a model suitable for application across a broad range of events, however, they did establish that factors such as the distance from the point of generation, soil moisture, soil characteristics, wind and rh, and the type and number of vehicles in the race had the largest effect on the amount and type of dust, particulate size, how quickly it settled, and the extent of the human health hazard present during the race. The authors scrupulously enumerated the weaknesses of this type of study and provide extensive recommendations for improving future dust monitoring efforts.
